Your Complete Small Tub Preparation Guide

Everything you need before your tub arrives — site prep, staining, electrical, and ongoing care.

01

Site Preparation

A solid foundation is essential for a long-lasting tub installation. You have several options for constructing a pad — packed gravel, pavers, concrete, or patio brick are all proven approaches.

For a more integrated look, installing into a submersible pit with retaining walls and drainage is also possible — just be sure to account for working and service rooms around the heater, pump, and filter.

"Pavers are the most popular base choice — practical, attractive, and easy to work with."

When selecting your location, consider these four factors before breaking ground:

  • Privacy from neighbors and sightlines
  • Distance from your electric and/or gas service connection
  • Space for accessories like stairs and shelves
  • Proximity of the heating system to the tub position

Storage & Staining

If you ordered a cedar tub and it arrives before you're ready to install, store all components in a dry location. Wood that becomes damp before assembly can cause lasting problems — protect it from moisture from day one.

Staining the outside surface is strongly recommended and best done before attaching jets and suction wall fittings. Pay special attention to the rim, which is prone to deterioration as water pools on the wood edges. The interior should be left untreated.

Recommended Products

PPG (formerly Sikkens) Cetol 1 RE and Penofin Ultra-Premium Red Label are both excellent choices. Other reputable options include Cabot, Behr, and Olympic.

Look for an exterior translucent stain that is micro-porous with strong UV and mold protection. Cedar, Teak, and Natural Oak are popular tint choices.

For shelves, stairs, or an enclosure, apply an extra coat on all up-facing surfaces beyond the manufacturer's recommendation.

Unlike wood tubs that require regular staining and water chemistry management, our fiberglass tubs are virtually maintenance-free. A simple brush-down is all it takes to keep the surface clean and looking great year after year. And if you ever want to refresh the look after many years of use, fiberglass can be repainted with the right product — we recommend Kelley Technical Coatings, a trusted name in fiberglass resurfacing that restores your tub to a like-new finish.

Electrical

Electrical prep can be completed while your tub is being manufactured. Local building codes require a GFCI-protected safety disconnect within sight of the tub, no closer than 5 feet away.

Standard Service
40A · 120/240V
Cable Required
#8 · 3-conductor + neutral
Heater Capacity

Safety Requirement
GFCI always required

*Tubs with jets require a larger service.

Weather Protection Note

The standard pump and electric spa pack are not weatherproof and must be kept dry — under a protected deck, in a shed, or inside one of our cedar enclosures.

Customers in WA, OR, and NJ should note that utility inspections may require listed weatherproof equipment. Specify this before delivery if applicable.

04

Energy Efficiency

If electricity rates in your area are high, insulation is a worthwhile investment. When installing into a deck, you have the opportunity to insulate both the floor and walls of the tub cavity for maximum efficiency.

For a freestanding setup, a pre-insulated floor option is available and can be added to your order before shipping.

05

Tub Care & Water Treatment

Detailed water treatment instructions are included in your care and maintenance manual. A few essentials to keep in mind:

  • Water balancing products are always required — maintain pH, total alkalinity, and hardness
  • Filter support products help keep water clear between changes
  • These are required even if you've ordered an electronic ozonator and/or ionizer
  • Proper balancing helps reduce or eliminate the need for bromine or shock treatments
